HEATHER MARIE VERNON: DURGA PUJA

Performance dates/times:
Thursday, Dec. 6: 6-9pm

Vernon's performance Durga Puja is an empowerment project that charts a personal transformation of the artist into Durga. Durga is the Indian goddess of war and she is a demon fighter; Durga means "the inaccessible" or "the invincible". Vernon is using this invincible goddess as a charged symbol of personal transformation. Vernon is also using metaphors of war and re-tooling them for this personal project. Elenore Antin’s CARVING: A Traditional Sculpture is an inspiration for Vernon's performance; completed in 1972, the piece documented the effects of a forced diet on her naked body and the ensuing weight loss over a 36-day period. Heather Cassils is also an important feminist marker, and in her work Cuts, she reinvents her body using diet, weightlifting and training. To create Durga Puja in Miami, Vernon has assembled a team of guides to coach her through this integral process of inner and outer transformation. Vernon is interested in transforming the self, the performer, and the woman, simultaneously over 7 weeks. For the performance of Durga Puja, Vernon will be projecting a video with an original sound track as a background to the performance. To prepare for the piece the artist is working with a movement artist, a vocal coach and a photographer, and musical guide throughout the 7 week period. Vernon is interested in the effects of working with a collaborative team, and considers her body a test site for all of their respective therapeutic work, waging this war, be-coming invincible.

Vernon's Verge Miami appearance will be the culmination of a 7-week performance; to learn more, read the Manapare.us interview with the artist.

CAITLIN BAUCOM WITH COLLEEN MARIE: SICKsick

Performance dates/times:
Thursday, Dec. 6: 6-9pm
Fri & Sat Dec. 7-8: 5-8pm

i imagine that yes is the only living thing

A tubercular fantasy, the high flush of fever, invaded body quivering with sick cells and short of breath. Eyes closed, plastered hair, twitching hips, saying yes. When throngs of people would avert their eyes from displays of pleasure and abdications of good health, Sick turns the gaze back on. Embracing infirmity, an imposed and romantic time out; exposing despised young bodies, sick, indulgent, non productive.

LIVECAST & PERFORMANCE BY JOSEPH HERRING: INFERNAL CAKES

Performance dates/times:
Thursday, Dec. 6: 6-9pm
DATES OF EVENT WILL BE VIEWABLE VIA LIVESTREAM ON THE VERGE MIAMI SCREENING ROOM PAGE

Infernal Cakes/Adjacent Manias dir. by Joseph Herring. Infernal Cakes/Adjacent Manias is shot, mixed and broadcast live. The performance represents a hybrid of folk dance, televised cook-offs, collision sports, and video games. Infernal Cakes/Adjacent Manias explores historical and contemporary pop-cultural forms of human interaction. The forms examined include: 1. The cakewalk and its evolution a from a cathartic lampooning of plantation society dance into a county fair ceremonial game of chance 2. The live-telecast football game 3. The cooking-based time management video game. Archetypes are reconfigured as the priority of the manifestations of gender and power relations are challenged.

cog nomen

COG NOMEN
Cog Nomen is made up of Guitarist, Buffalo Brown and drummer, Brave Ulysses, both of whom have been staples in the Miami live music scene for a better part of the last decade. Cog Nomen's music is part electro-pop with an good dose of psychedelic ambient rock-scapes (Imagine Pink Floyd jamming with Daft Punk at Brian Eno's house). Each of their songs constructs a familiar place with spry rhythms, lush textures and engaging hooks without the safety net of plug-ins or pre-recorded sequences favored by laptop musicians. Their debut album Even The Odd was recorded live during the summer of 2011 while facing each other in the recording studio. Recently they have been at it again with their unique twist of psychedelic and pop music- releasing their second album titled "The End Of Knowing (As We Know It)" in CD and MP3 format on August 1st. The Cog Nomen sound is so raw yet refined that its instantly familiar while exuberantly fresh and unpredictable.

datamouth

DATAMOUTH
Datamouth is the moniker of Chris Salazar, an artist and musician originally from Santiago, Chile who currently lives in Miami, FL. Salazar's musical background is diverse: guitarist in the influential South Florida punk band Milkshed in the 1990's and early 2000's; guitarist in the instrumental rock band Vidavox (described as an amalgam of jazz, progressive rock, jam band, & math rock) in the early-mid 2000's; and performer/collaborator in various other musical projects. Additionally, video game soundtracks and Freestyle music were among the earliest electronic influences on Salazar. His approach to electronic music is atypical in that his tracks often evolve from melodies written on guitar. Although Salazar is a senior art director professionally, outside of work, he continues to work in art by constantly drawing, designing, photographing + film-making, and creating music.
